Yes sorta. Brother was DD and got a front plate ticket at a dui checkpoint. He was 100% sober. Also got a failure to notify dmv of address change since he didn’t have a sticker with his new address on his license. The rest of us were drunk. Thanks New Haven PD.

Yes, but only after coming off the highway in Bridgeport. I was in an old Porsche (944 so nothing too fancy), and a cop pulled me over because of the no front plate but was nice and just gave me a warning. I ignored it and almost 20 years later the car still has no front plate. At the time my dad figured it was maybe a cop who suspected the car had been stolen, because I was coming from Fairfield in a Porsche, but who the heck knows. Pretty sure cops in Fairfield used to hang out by the Bridgeport border and go out of their way to pull over people of color who had just entered the town (Fairfield). This was something someone told me a long time ago. I’m white if it matters (probably mattered in the traffic stop)

Yup, years ago when I was probably like 18. I even had the plate in the front windshield and still got pulled over by a statie. I think it was because me and my buddy both had our hoods up and looked kinda sketchy in a shitty old car lol

I've never had an issue with no front plate. I won't take delivery of a new car if they drill holes in the front bumper. Buddy of mine hasnt had one for 10 years and he's gotten one ticket by a state cop up on uconn Storrs campus. Pretty sure he just paid it and never fixed it. Like many motor vehicle infractions in ct it's just pay to play. Like with tints for example, it's cheaper to pay the ticket than it is to remove the tints. And it's easier to pay the ticket than to take the time off of work to remove it and go to the dmv for proof to get the ticket dropped.

I didn't have a front plate for 12 years and never had an issue. The day before my son was going to take his driver's license test with my car, I found out there can be no missing plates (among other things) or that car could not be used in the test. I had to rush to the DMV to re-register my car and they gave me two new plates. I miss my old one.

Yes but it was almost 20 years ago. Same cop followed me home one night and pulled me over 50 feet from my house to scream at me because he thought my stock license plate light was "blinding him and other drivers". The lens was yellowed with age and covered in grime. That cop was a shit head who was frequently so drunk on duty that he couldn't get out of his car.

Been driving since 2007 now ( crazy time flies ). Grew up in FFLD county so that's a lot of luxury vehicles without front plates. Never really seen them get pulled over.

Leased a Lexus in 2016, pulled over in 2019 a few months before the lease ended. Cop did the most reckless U turn I've seen on a busy 3 way , stop sign on one. Chased me down to the end of my private road to hand me a warning. Again I'm thankful it was just a warning but my guy had to have driven by at least 20 front plateless cars just in that traffic and then decide eh F this particular dude.

I go to the Lexus dealer the next day and my guy says uh yea we don't put them on usually bc literally nobody gets pulled over for that in this area. It's a rule but... This is the first time I've ever seen it at all enforced.

So he was just as confused as I was.

I'm on a different car now and again no front plates I've been pulled over a few times since then, only once a real issue the others just hey watch it type of pullovers ( aka nothing no one really ticketing people for going like 42-44 on the post road ). Again no one has had an issue. Never comes up.

Like I know I'm pushing my luck but I'm just going to say that that cop just felt like being a dick to a young looking 30 year old Asian dude driving a nicer than expected car. Try to scare me or something thinking I'm a teen. Otherwise there was no reason for it in that situation. Potentially T boning 5 cars to chase me down.

Nah, they don't bother to pull people over specifically for not having a front plate. but it IS something extra they'll tack on when you get pulled over for speeding, dui, etc. Son got pulled over for speeding, they tacked on for a frame around the back plate put on by the dealer where I bought the car. Those are illegal, too.

Your ID is your name + DOB/SSN. Your address has nothing to do with your identity as it is not unique to you. There are very few times and places where you need to prove your address outside of voting. Having your address on your license or ID is overkill and unnecessarily compromises personal information any time you show ID. Ironically CT doesn't use SSNs for your driver license number because of this.

I don’t think plate frames are illegal as long as they don’t obscure any information on the plate. That includes the ”Connecticut” and “Constitution State” parts. But I’m sure a cop can write for whatever he feels like in that regard and just say the frame obscured something.

Yes, locals will stop you but if you have a good reason you will just get a warning. They will look at your tires and for any other violations..its a cop magnet.

My impression after talking to the cop is that most people with no front plate are misusing the back plate on the vehicle to drive an unregistered vehicle around.

Locals are the ones that stop for bad lights and things hanging from the rearview mirror.

It wasn't always illegal to have no front plate

>The law required Connecticut motor vehicles to have a front and a rear license plate until 1980. With the passage of PA 80-466, vehicles were required to have only a rear license plate and the normal registration period was made two years instead of one year. This legislation was enacted primarily for fiscal reasons. It originated in the Appropriations Committee and was referred to no other committees with cognizance over the substantive issues involved in going to a single plate. Going from two license plates to one and going to two-year registrations had been identified for the Appropriations Committee by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as two of several budget options for cutting costs or raising revenue.
By 1986, the General Assembly had decided to reverse the requirement and go back to two plates for most vehicles. (Fire apparatus; motorcycles; camp trailers; commercial trailers; and vehicles displaying dealer, repairer, junk, or transporter plates were allowed to remain with one plate.) The legislature enacted PA 86-388 to convert back to two plates over a six-year period that began on July 1, 1987. All but the exempted classes of vehicles had to display two plates by July 1, 1993. The DMV commissioner had to issue two plates for all new registrations, beginning July 1, 1987. Two plates had to be issued for all registration renewals beginning July 1, 1991.

1

MrBleah OP t1_jec7ee3 wrote

Some bumper setups you just have to, but there are a lot of alternative front plate mounts that can be used to mount a plate without drilling, it’s just not stuff the dealer will generally use as they tend to be designed with specific models in mind and not everyone wants one as they often put the plate off center which for some people is worse than having a mount drilled into the center.
