Better off not putting in an s trap at all. Look up air admittance valve and follow directions for doing it right.

You very much do not want an s trap. They act as siphons, sucking the water that is supposed to act as a seal for sewer gasses etc down the pipes.

Thank you both. I’m going to Home Depot to get the air admittance valve and going to install that with a p trap. Much appreciated!

I’m in the same situation. My expert recommended checking local code as AAV are not universally accepted. (Just fyi.)

S traps are specifically prohibited by international plumbing code so you are no worse off code wise and much better off real world wise with a P trap and AAV.

Update! Made it a P trap with air admittance valve. Will use primer and pvc cement next. Better?

You did really well! I would double check if you can if your local jurisdiction takes AAV’s as acceptable method instead a true vent thru roof. Either way, this will likely be very effective code issues aside.

I think the IPC says youre not supposed to use S traps. Ive never looked it up but Ive never seen anybody install one.

Thanks, I’m scrapping the S trap based on collective wisdom from the experts in this sub

Ditch the accordion tube as well. Does nothing but collect gunk in the folds.

Hard to get away from with the current setup but very easy to get rid of once you have a p trap into a tee like it should be.
