I have used freetaxusa for the last 3 years. I know I could do it for free if I am willing to just do the paper forms, but the convenience of e-file worth the $12 I have paid.
How much you pay depends on the complexity. I own a business now and have an accountant friend I know handle most of it and just copy what she posts to me into TurboTax, still costs me about $120 for the software [she I’d be happy to pay, but refuses payment]
Before my business, If not for “free file” it cost more like $60 simply because I had a few investments and not just a w-2
Yeah my tax situation isn't complicated since they made it much more difficult to itemize. Businesses and unusual (or complicated) investment strategies can add layers of complexity. I'm married to a CPA, but I still do our taxes.

Isn't this only if you have W2 income, i.e., can do a 1040EZ?
I tried this with HSA income (so a 1099-SA) and was told I needed to use a paid service. Ditto for other schedules (I have a timeshare, so that counts as rental income).
