Not this week. It's been too warm. Possibly next week after the cold snap we will have on Friday.

I recommend that you call around to some local tackle shops and ask which ponds are fishable. They usually know.

You can also ask for info here: https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=10.0

Test the ice when you get there.

I fish up here in the Belfast area. I've been out Saturdays and Sundays for the past 3 or 4 weekends. There isn't a ton of ice, but it's definitely safe on the small ponds.

My suggestion would be go to IFW's website and look up the stocking reports for your county (if you're looking for trout). You'll notice the bodies that get fewer numbers of stocked fish are often tiny ponds that provide lots of opportunity to catch some fish and lock up far before the big lakes that are often more popular.

Moose Pond at the base of Pleasant Mountain has had tons of pop-ups for the last couple weekends; looks like Long Lake in Naples, too. Depends on how south you want to be.

Lots of ice fishermen and skaters out. Lower Ossipee Pond was fine, as was Middle Range Pond. These are quite far apart, so most ponds should be fine at this point for foot traffic. A small pond I visited on Sunday in Hebron had like 8 inches of ice and snowmobiles driving on it.

Just stick to where you see other fishermen and if it is much above freezing, get off the ice by early afternoon.

Most people forget that that the night is twice as long as the day. So just because your phone says it's a high of 38 degrees doesn't mean it's a no-go. You can also attach a large nail to a heavy broom handle and make your own testing pole.

You can test the ice with a chipping hammer or something similar. Do so close to shore, then another 100’ out. 3” of ice is safe enough to walk on.

3 inches of clear hard ice or 6 inches of old punky ice is safe. Whack it with the back of an axe and see how far down the crack goes.
