Almost every cinema has a captioning device. Just ask for it. It’s a game changer, really. Some are glasses and some are a box that you twist into the cup holder. It’s amazing.

And many people do not like or can't use that equipment. They want or need open captions.

Don’t like is not a valid reason.

Disability are.

Those who need captions do have disabilities (e.g., deaf/hard of hearing, autism). And many of those do not like closed caption equipment for multiple reasons.

Wish every Maine theater had 'em. Or at least a couple theater areas set aside in theaters that had it. Maybe that's part of why the fun of going to the theater has lessened for me.

You'd think they could be added to the film and you could wear special glasses to see them

You can, I’ve done the glasses at the Regal in Portsmouth NH. I have hearing aides and miss the cc at the theater. I get so much more when I rewatch at home with them on

Every theater has to legally offer captions but most do closed captions such as glasses or a device in your seat.

Are any of those four theaters reasonable drive from you so you can have a chance to go back to a theater and enjoy yourself more?

Unfortunately no. I'm in Southern Maine.

Sucks too because streaming doesn't have the same oomph vs. having your eardrums wonderfully filled with noise in the theater.

CC and audio description devices are an ADA requirement for theaters since 2017, yeah it sucks that the words aren’t on the screen but you’ll still have them on the little reflector. As technology and awareness increases I’m sure more theaters will have them with the special glasses.

And people who don't like or can't use that equipment simply won't go, costing the theaters lost business. So more theaters are doing both.
