Looking for recommendations of hiking trails that are within 1.5 hours of Portland that would be good for hiking (and snowshoeing if necessary) in early March. I have rugged, backcountry capable snowshoes that can handle moderate elevation changes.

Any suggestions?

I suggest that you wait until there’s snow.

Also, mainetrailfinder.com.

western maine is within that portland driving zone and has snow. We've done a lot of snowshow hiking on the local trails but we've also found a number of cross-country ski places that allow snowshoe trekkers and those places have been great for long "hikes" with various elevation options

The Portland water company has a bunch of land on the south side of lake Sebago with a ton of trails. About 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Portland

Poland Spring Inn has several trails that are open to explore.

There is also Oxbow where you can explore, just around the corner...

Plenty of trails near north conway nh, just about 1.5 for you to get to the white mountains from Portland. Dozens of trails off the kankamangus, or at great glen trails, Jackson ski touring snowshoe trails, bear notch if you don't mind paying $25 or so. But some trail heads in white mt national forest are free, or pretty cheap to park at ($5) off the kankamangus.
