Metal Machine Music.

It may have opened some doors for noise-rock/experimental music, but I'm convinced that it was made simply to push the envelope on what a label would release. I think Lou Reed said some disparaging things about it after it was released, and it was widely known for being one of the most returned albums of all-time.

This is the answer. Anyone who tries to defend that album is completely missing the point of the album. It is supposed to be indefensible. It was meant as a fuck you to the record label who wouldn't release him from his contract.

I will say, I remember buying that album for $45 in 1999 or, back in high school. It was out of print in NA, so I had to import it from Germany through this little local record store. I had a friend over and I'm like "we're going to listen to this god dammit, I paid $45 for it." About half an hour in, another friend shows up and walks into my room and we're just sitting there with this noise just blaring through my speakers and he's like "What the fuck are you guys doing?", and I'm like "listen this part coming up is the best part" BLEEEEECCCHHEHHEJEKELASOKEJANEINAELLEAM....and we broke down laughing. That was the only time I ever listened to it in full, but it's just feedback and noise. Like I've seen noise rock shows including a Thurston Moore solo show, that arguably sounded similar, but he had a drummer and a bass player...and MMM isn't noise-rock, it's just noise without anything else. I can almost guaruntee you Lou reed just put a microphone up to an amp, hit record, walked out of the studio and came back an hour later and hit STOP. Then gave that to the record label.

Elton John teaming up with Britney Spears for Hold Me Closer. I know he was trying to get her back into recording music, but the song is horribly mixed and there's so many effects over his and Britney's voices it's unrecognizable. The song he did with Dua Lipa, Cold Heart, is much better.

Metallica has dropped a few stinkers over the years, but Lou Reed was usually consistently excellent.

Under The Red Sky is not only the worst Dylan album, it's a solid contender for worst album overall. It's ostensibly an album for kids, but that doesn't really help much. Still awful everything.

Love Neko Case but her Honolulu song on The Worse Things Get is really really bad.

Love Tom Waits, but Road to Peace feels like it was based on Reddit comments.

Some would say "Who Dunnit" by Genesis, but I actually love that song. It's fun, even if annoying. And that annoying aspect is part of the fun for me.

With Sympathy by Ministry probably qualifies here...not because it was specifically or even horribly "bad", though, because it really isn't for the time it was released in 1983. Maybe more for how it really isn't Ministry's sound, though. Grandpa Al wasn't anywhere near his full stride with that album.

Wild Honey Pie by the Beatles. Don't get me wrong, Revolution 9 is terrible, but it stands out as possibly the most widely known piece of avante-guard music. Wild Honey Pie doesn't even get a historical footnote in anything. Non-Beatles fans don't know it exists, most Beatles fans have forgotten about it, and those who haven't wish they had.

I consider myself a pretty big Beatles fan for someone born in the 80s, but they do have a few shitty songs and I actually quite like a few of their "bad" songs like Octopus's Garden and even Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. Hell, I like Flying.

Wild Honey Pie is probably the most egregious.

I’m gonna get downvoted to hell, but the Car by the Arctic Monkeys.

Many would say “listen to it again”, “you don’t have evolved taste”, or “bands aren’t supposed to stay the same”. Yeah, I get that. All for evolution of a band but that album is a slow, shell of what I loved about the Arctic Monkeys.

I definitely recognize when an album isn’t for me even when I still love the artist. I’ll be waiting for the day they put out an album that has more energy.

I'm going to upvote you even though I disagree wholeheartedly.

I do get it. I understand. They've changed. I love their first record and their latest.

And I don't think they're ever going back.

I will say I got to see them live in Vegas a couple months back and they still go deep back into their catalog so it's not like they've abandoned their old sound either.

And I'm not going to be that guy who tells you to listen to it more. I have it and I love it, but that doesn't mean you will.

His label was mad at him for his previous record, which was electronic/synth heavy so he offered them a Country album he had previously recorded but they rejected it and demanded a “rock” album. So, Neil being Neil, he formed a backing band called The Shocking Pinks and made a 50s style rockabilly album.

The label was so mad that they shut down recording before Everybody’s Rocking was completed and released it “as is”. They then sued him for ~$3 million for making albums that were “uncharacteristic of his previous work”. He then countersued for breach of contract, because his label had offered him complete artistic freedom. He won and the label publicly apologized lol

No problem. There are a bunch of little nuggets like that throughout his career but this one is by far my favorite.
