Nodding approvingly? You don't fish much, huh? Boat anglers are some of the grumpiest lot!

Alright that's fair. Let's replace nodding approval with a curt glance.

Go to www.blockislandchamber.com and clicking on 'Who's Open' at the top of the page. Most shops are still opened weekends, might have limited hours on weekdays.

My husband and I went one early May with a couple of friends—thinking, eh, it’s a bit early for the season but it’ll be fun anyway…
It was cold, miserably windy, nothing was open, everything was insanely expensive, and it became one of the rare times we concluded this little getaway was not worth it and we wouldn’t do it again.

But if you just want to go hiking or walk on an unpeopled, windswept beach - then it’s heaven.

I’d love that, too—in our case I forgot to mention it was also raining!

It'll be quiet and not much will be open. Weather could be fairly gnarly. On the other hand, there's a certain stoic charm in experiencing a New England island in late fall. The raw sea air against your face. A grizzled fisherman in slickers nodding approvingly in your direction. Put on some victorian clothes and walk the forsaken beach, pining for your lost love.
