This cannot be true. Tom Waits, Iggy, Joan Jett, and many others would disagree, and those are just examples of old school cool in the music industry.

Did you miss this part? They were giving famous examples, because those are people we know. People who are not famous can be just as cool as those who aren't, but if I credit "Jack, my next door neighbor" it means shit to everyone else.
