too bad mill river park insists on keeping the bridge next to it a pedestrian only road. the business they and others would get would boom if cars could pass through

−12

Pinkumb t1_j4h57bd wrote

Let it be known your viewpoint is completely disconnected from reality.

For starters, that bridge is irrelevant to Soul Tasty's access to customers. They're literally off of two major roads — Tresser and Washington. The only people that bridge would convenience are people who live on Stillwater Avenue. Anyone further than that can simply drive to Tresser. It's worth noting everyone on Stillwater... is walking distance from the bridge. That bridge has nothing to do with Soul Tasty's ability to get business.

Second you're actively disseminating misinformation about a project that can't make any progress because of the exact misinformation you're putting out there. There are two cohorts who prevent anything from happening to that bridge. 1) People who want it restored because it has historic value and 2) people who want to drive on it. Restoring the bridge is possible but it is financially irresponsible to repair it to a point of allowing cars. The cost is way too high for a bridge no one would even use. There are traffic studies that prove this. Any traffic going over that bridge can just as easily use Tresser.

So you can make it a historic bridge you can walk on, or you can knock it down and let people drive on it. Those are your options. No one likes those options, which is why the city has taken so long to do anything we lost almost a million dollars from a grant expiring. I've never even heard of that happening. We got a grant a decade ago and didn't do anything with it. Enough.

Yeah. So let it be pedestrian only and stop moaning about it.

Eh these are probably more popular than hidden gems but when I lived downtown, had friends who didn’t venture up to Springdale so I’m gonna just go with these:

Village table - favorite breakfast sandwiches in Stamford

Vinny’s backyard - favorite wings in Stamford.

Olio - probably favorite restaurant for a date night in Stamford. Just consistently good.

wheresmylife t1_j4g4ux0 wrote

Solid list. We’ve had village table cater a few parties and they give you awesome platters of mixed sandwiches. I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything I’ve tried there.

I’ve been slowly trying out different things on the menu at Village Table over the past 2 years and I have yet to have something I don’t like - a really solid sandwich shop and I’m happy to have it close by!

FreshCo is an excellent deli/breakfast place. The woman who runs it is a jewel of a human being. I’m telling you it’s a sight to be seen the way she knows everyone who walks through the door. She’s watched children grow up in her shop, she knows their birthdays, she helps me with my little ones when I have to juggle them to the bathroom. She’s never met a stranger and it’s a gorgeous little slice of humanity.

Plus she keeps an absolutely spotless kitchen, makes a delicious bagel/breakfast sandwich/whatever you want, has Taylor Ham/pork roll, and she carries bagels from that guy with the cult following who usually distributes them for pick up from one of the local churches. Eric’s Bagels. They’re solid.

Everyone goes to Mecha but there's another Raemen place 6 doors down called Kyushu which is arguably better.

Judy's BBQ is really good and it is the definition of "hidden" because they closed the physical location. You can still order pick-up but you have to go to the other restaurant Tabouli in Bulls Head.

Mecha is fine, it’s a good base-level for local ramen. Kyushu is not better. Do not be swayed by this fool.

Pinkumb t1_j4hbqp2 wrote

I didn't say anything bad about Mecha. I also said "arguably." I will accept your apology.

3

Would you say that it’s better? Would you argue for it?

Pinkumb t1_j4hgax4 wrote

I'd say if you're looking for hidden gems in Stamford you probably already know about Mecha but don't know about Kyushu and it has value.

bringmeyourgold t1_j4hgm78 wrote

That all being said, you wouldn’t argue that it’s better yourself. Would you?

Omg the Polish Delight or Taste of Poland sandwich (whatever the name is for their signature sandwich the first one listed on the board)…. This is THE sandwich. If one person in our family goes and gets the sandwich and other people find out that they went and got the sandwich for didn’t take them or ask if they wanted one brought home for them, it is a betrayal.

Things I also recommend from there: Work The rope-form bacon in the packing located in the refrigerated bin where the yogurts are; all of the pickles they sell; the hard dry sausages in the case that you point and they get it for you; mustards; sauerkraut varieties; chocolate (all the real ones from Europe. Like the verboden original Kinder eggs with the toy egg inside of them. And…. ALL of the layered tart/cakes in the tall refrigerated case behind the counter. But, if you get lucky, and they have the one with all of the currants on it that day, get an extra bug slice. That one is so good. I actually ordered a whole one for holiday for company.
