Is this common or are fox rare there?

Urban foxes are very common in London They were pulling our rubbish /garbage bags apart last year, so the whole area finally got food recycling bins

I see foxes are the racoons of England.

ElegantBob OP t1_j6993m7 wrote

Yeah exactly

They are sooooo cute

But they are a pest and I can see why people don’t want them around

But they are adorable….

Globalist_Nationlist t1_j69awbk wrote

Racoons can be pretty adorable when they don't catch you by surprise in the dark.

Nothing is funnier than catching a family of racoons trying to ransack a garbage can... They all kind of stare at you with their little masked faces just hoping you'll leave them alone.

I remember hearing some noise with the garbage cans at night and turned on my phone's flashlight.

Over half a dozen pairs of eyes were staring back at me.

Until they wake you at 3:22 a.m. screaming in heat. Although frankly raccoons make a right ruckus too, fighting over who gets to go into the garbage can first.

ElegantBob OP t1_j69bdib wrote

Yeah I have had years of the foxes screaming at night, and a previous place I live had the awful fox smell at the end of the garden.

So I don’t mind if the “go away” but also - part of me still loves how cute they are

Gisschace t1_j6a5v19 wrote

They’re only a pest cause we’re dirty bastards who waste food and leave our shit around.

They don’t really cause any damage or issues aside from that.

6

RunningNumbers t1_j6aki85 wrote

Do they keep the rat population down?

4

ElegantBob OP t1_j6akx8m wrote

Interesting question, sadly I don’t know I hardly ever see any rats in London, certainly not enough to estimate if the numbers of them are changing

quadmasta t1_j699mzo wrote

These look smaller than the ones I see in the US

ElegantBob OP t1_j69abyx wrote

Could be, British foxes are smaller than a Border Collie and have a slight build

Black_Moons t1_j6akd0y wrote

I believe the two brown ones are common while the orange one is legendary.

Must be warm up there. And safe

15

ElegantBob OP t1_j695qci wrote

It has been freezing recently, and yes I agree, they must have noticed that the roof is warmer than the ground.

Also they are out of reach of the local dogs

14

ThrowawayVangelis t1_j695jcv wrote

I’m guessing you guys don’t have a very big eagle population there

11

ElegantBob OP t1_j695ztd wrote

Correct, although the last few years we have had a growing population of parakeets.

But they are no threat to the foxes

13

Maximum-Mixture6158 t1_j69bpk8 wrote

Yet. They're working on a plan on how to get bigger, stronger, faster; they hold secret races and give out prizes for "most improved". Their goal is world domination by 2040.

Kestrels, sparrowhawks, maybe a buzzard on occasions, but eagles only really live on the north coasts of Scotland.

We do have red kites in parts of England too.

Eagles only live in Scotland and the most isolated parts of Wales and England 👍

Just a FYI for Americans reading this post.

Rabies doesn't exist in the UK anymore, so urban foxes aren't likely to carry anything serious.

TheLovelyMadamToh t1_j694gu2 wrote

The foxes are precious but my eyes are drawn straight to how cluttered the shed is. So much potential for a nice sitting area, or anything really, going to waste.

It is an AirBnB place

They have a lot of outdoor furniture in there for people wanting to hold parties in the garden

Safer there than in Nottingham I reckon

Majestic_Preparation t1_j6ca4d8 wrote

Likely waiting to be fed. They can be assholes. At least the one we have in UK. Old office place we had few of them and badgers.

Cleaning staff fed them almost daily and they multiplied fast to larger number. They were coming out at certain time expecting to be fed. When cleaning staff was replaced nobody fed them. Foxes started to bite car tyres and fight between each other. RSPCA animal care was called soon later they were gone probably relocated.

Cool shed/cabin, but wouldn't a storage unit be better for storing junk/trash.

It’s an AirBnB place , they don’t seem to care about that, just that they have outdoor furniture to allow them to rent the place out for parties in the garden
