My car got towed at around 8pm on Saturday and I received a parking ticket. I parked my car around 2-3pm on a street for which I have a residential permit, and where I’ve parked several times before. There was no signage at the time indicating that we were not supposed to park there. This is a street that somewhat regularly has construction, but the signs alerting for no parking have always been pretty obvious and I always check. The parking ticket mentions a valet zone with no parking from 7pm-1am, but that strip has never been a valet zone (unless they’re using valet zone to mean any towaway area).

When I spoke to the police officer that alerted me to the fact that my car had been towed, I mentioned that I had seen no signage and he replied that he heard the same thing from multiple other people. However, I have no hard evidence that the sign was not there — just my word/recollection.

Should I dispute the ticket?

Were you parked in front of a business that has ever done valet? Valet isn’t typically something that just pops up as a one time thing. I think if you can prove historically that there’s no permanent signage and the place consistently does not have valet signs you might stand a chance. If it’s a significant enough fine (guessing likely if there was a fee associated with the tow) that it’s worth the day you’ll likely have to take, I’d fight it.

Court is one option. Take pictures to bring with you as proof. Otherwise it’s your vs their word
