I found this detective thriller book while walking(in my town we have these small libraries where you can take books and put one back idk what they're called or if this is a thing elsewhere.) And I read the back and I was hooked on the premise. When I got home and opened to the first chapter immediately there was a raunchy sex scene. I was barely introduced to the characters and so far they just started banging in the first lines of the book... Idk if this is a problem to some people but I personally don't enjoy m/f romance (that's because I'm gay but that doesn't mean a story is bad for that) but I immediately put it down. I'm just not hooked by a story that just has smut in the first bloody page. The reviews on it were really positive and i was super hyped to read it but i was immediately off put by the first chapter. Am I needlessly complaining? Am i judging it to hard? I just wanted a cool detective story not 50 shades of grey in the first page idk if that's too much to ask...

I like romances. I'm straight. I like reading "smutty" romances.
I don't like it when they start banging within the first couple chapters, and I'd prefer it take even longer so I can feel invested in their relationship.
That being said, "erotica" is extremely popular and it's basically the book version of "porn with almost a sort of story to excuse the porn". It sounds like you found some erotica.
Sadly, these days almost all "romance" is erotica. It's hard to find real romances.
Seems like Detective Dick arrived with the pizza delivery early in that "detective thriller," lmao.
Or maybe he "dropped off a package". 🤣

You picked up a book which sounded interesting, started to read it, did not like it because there was a sex scene. OK.
I am a bit confused here, you want validation to feeling disappointed a book turned out to not be something you liked?
>Am i judging it to hard
There is no too hard or too soft, or objective judgment. You did not like what you were reading, that is fine.

Sometimes it be like that. Time to find another book. As long as you're not expecting people to cater to your exact wants, that's fine. People are free to write how they wish, and you are free to choose what you want to read.

Theres def better books out there

Your subjective opinion is valid. As are everyone else's. A lot of people may like that book. It's okay that you don't. Doesn't mean it's objectively bad. Doesn't mean that your wrong. It's just not for you, and you can choose to be satisfied by moving on to another book you might enjoy.

It can be frustrating to invest time and effort into a book only to find that it didn't meet our expectations, but everyone's tastes and preferences are different. Just because a book didn't resonate with us doesn't necessarily mean that it's not a good book. Taking a break from reading for a bit or trying a different genre might help reignite your love for reading. And who knows, maybe you'll stumble upon a hidden gem that becomes your new favorite book. Keep exploring and happy reading!"

It's a story. The writer chose that for a reason. You're only in the first chapter and judging it way too harshly. Try not to live life like that. Keeps you from new experiences, observations.

I think i am ig I'm not a fan of softcore porn when it's the first part of the book tbh

I disagree.
If it's going to be a detective story with some sex in it, I expect it to lead with exposition, plot points, and character development related to the detective story. I expect the sex scenes to be introduced later, organically, as the story develops. And I expect a story that is presented as a detective story to follow this pattern.
On the other hand, if it's going to be a sex story with some detection in it, I expect it to lead with sex scenes, etc. And I expect it to be presented as a sex story.
I don't think it's judging a book that's presented as a detective story to instead open like a sex story. That's a bait-and-switch, in my opinion. And a weird one, too.

I used to love Outlander. Then it became soft porn. I gave it up.

What book?

Yeah, it's just much harder to come up with an attractive story without hacking into people's biological needs. Also, much of the blame falls on readers, since often authors are just trying to survive by leaning more on the commercial side rather than artistic.

I don't like books with sex scenes either. I guess that's the negative of picking up a book in a random place like that. No content warnings or reviews to check.
