The first Expanse book, Leviathan Wakes definitely highlights this, with each book following playing around with different genres such as conspiracy thriller, western frontier, etc.

One of my absolute favourite books is Cinnamon and Gunpowder which reads like those cooking blogs where you have to scroll through someone’s life story to get the recipe… BUT SET ON A PIRATE SHIP IN 1819.

Murder mysteries before 1700s. Yes The name of the rose is one. But even earlier like Roman times.

These exist. I've read them. You can ask r/whatsthatbook for titles.

For example: THE BLOOD OF CAESAR by Albert A. Bell, Jr. Pliny the Younger (as sleuth) and the historian Tacitus (as his Watson) encounter murder in the emperor Domitian’s palace.
