Graduating from college in the area and will be staying in Boston post-grad. Very actively involved with music at my school and was wondering if anyone has resources to form or join a band to keep up with it after college? Any resources would be appreciated (would love to do vocals but also can play guitar and piano). Music is really important to me and I’m not sure how to continue singing after college.

Go to shows at local venues, talk and network with the bands. Go to open mic nights to see if you can sit in. You can intern at local studios to meet local musicians as well.

When I’m looking for a band I will post an ad on Craigslist. Just like a dating profile, be very specific about what you’re looking for. Finding a band that’s a good fit will take time and patience. Having keyboard skills is also a huge plus.

One last tip. Don’t take any shit from the egotistical guitar player who’s never made it and thinks they’re Jimi Hendrix. I never understood why, but many bands always keep the toxic asshole around and cycle through musicians. Move on quickly when you encounter that.

I hate it when drummers are theatrical. “Look at me”. Shut up and keep time, Ringo.

Thank you for this! I’ll be working full time so won’t be able to intern anywhere but this is great advice much appreciated

Perform and mingle at open mic nights. Find a convenient one you like. And don't miss the Lizard Lounge on Mondays. It's the best mic in the region and brings out the best talent and original music. Craig's List musicians page can help you connect to more people, but as always use caution and meet strangers in a public place, and expect a lot of flakes before you find anyone good.

I had the same passion, I ended up doing band promotions and management as a side gig.

I spent a couple months checking out local shows, then I found establishments that desired talent and facilitated getting the bands gigs, made a couple bucks and had fun.

There’s always the times bands need a fill in and they already know you, so extra bonus.

If you want to start cheap and easy, VFW’s and Legions have cheap halls and a liquor license

If you send me what you’re looking to do specifically I can post something for you on the musician board at studio52 in Allston

People also care about culture fit in a band so age, temper, how serious you are etc are helpful

Craigslist, bandmix or put flyers up at O’Brien’s or the midway.

The Bebop has live music almost every night, great food and drinks too! I know Berklee kids often perform there. They also have open mic comedy and trivia. I’m sure you could sign up to perform + meet others and network

Just go to a ton of shows at smaller venues and make friends there.
