Specifically to play with diffusion or gpt models, just generation and fine tuning, not large training.

I gear towards MBP due to portability and build quality.

Any advice is appreciated.

PD: for my work, I have a 14” M1 Pro but do GPU stuff (in-house vision models) on the cloud, so I don’t know how practical it is for diffusion/gpt models.

There's no such thing as future proof in ai. Focus on present proofing

I don’t have much space in my home office. Shall I still for a desktop?

I think you need to research the basics of ai hardware. Laptops are almost all worthless, with the exceptions being specially designed laptops, which still only provide mediocre performance.

Just train on the cloud, don’t stress about your laptop, it won’t ever have the GPU for DL, unless you want to shell out for a Lambda machine.
