I always liked the original Silent Hill's save points. Harry (the main character) would use them to chronicle his journey up to that point in case someone came across his notes. Wasn't revolutionary, but just a neat touch of emersion.

So, intro cutscene for the game, the big bad zaps all the Dragons in the world and turns them into crystal statues. You play as a child dragon, you hid behind one of the adults and didn't get zapped.
It's never really explained why, cuz magic, but when you touch a dragon statue, it frees them. There's a short cutscene for each dragon, they are voice acted, they give little nuggets of wisdom, or just random rambles, but each dragon statue cutscene is different. After the cutscene, there is a crystal pad left behind with a fairy on it. Stand on the pad and you can talk to the fairy, the fairy lets you replay that cutscene or save the game.

Wherever you wanted. It lead to things like saving right before a fight or a big guy you wanna catch, so if it goes wrong you just turn of the game boy and try again.

ah i guess that’s like most games today, i thought it was a save point that was unique in some way. like ffvii’s bouncing question mark!

Definitely Resident Evil you had to have ink ribbons and find a typewriter.
