Damn, and the thing is I never drop this phone. Same case and protector from day 1. I take it out of case to clean and get dust off. That sucks

I don't have any paint chipping on mine. If you are using a case, sometimes this happens if you let small particles get between the phone and the case.

I clean it at least once a week, and that is when I noticed the small gray dots.

Just got a 14 pro in the space black color you mentioned. Nothing yet as I have a case on it. Prior to this I had a 13 Pro Max and didn’t see any markings at all on the sides or back. I would often take the case off while at home.

I have the deep purple and don’t have chipping. But I’ve also always used a case.

Same, I have a case and screen protector. There are 2 places around the frame where the paint is off. So, it is concerning.

Yup. Although I have iPhone 14 pro max but it was my fault as I dropped it on a rubble road. Immediate thing I noticed after the fall was cracked tempered glass and a bit of scratch on the case (apple silicone). Later when I removed the case and saw the phone frame carefully is when I noticed that a bit of paint was chipped. 4 months later, and I still feel the frustration.
