That doesn’t actually mean “charging”, just “plugged in”. Which 99% times means the same. But it could mean you are getting very low power. This could be from the wire or the charger.

This is common on iPads pro, when working hard and plugged in using not optimal charger.

Also, it happens with any device connected to a low power USB from a computer.

What charger are you using? Have your device been in contact with water prior to the charge?

Fair point, I did equate plugged in to charging.

Thing is - I am using the Apple USB C charger with an an Apple C to Lightning cable.

Once the phone shut down, I plugged it in without starting it up first - obviously it started up once battery was sufficient and it seems the issue has gone away.

No to water contact, phone is barely a month old and I’ve babied it.

I’m suspecting a software bug of some sort, but not sure.

If it’s not charging it’s probably not software, I’m afraid. Does the device get very hot?

The battery may be defective. Talk directly to Apple support.

Edit: I see it charged properly just a few hours prior. Is that right?

Correct.

As soon as I power down the device, and let the charger wake the phone - it charges properly.

I’ve had this happen intermittently once or twice before.

Edit: No it doesn’t get hot during charging, sometimes after extended use while doing intensive processes it gets warm.

I had the same problems with the base iPhone 14 model, not the Pro version. Plugged it in overnight and the battery drained instead of charging. The phone's barely a week old, and reconnecting the cable solved the problem, after that it charged normally. I figured some "adaptive" or "smart" charging bug may cause the problem, I'd say try turning those off and charge at daytime. My battery lasts more than 2 days for me, so it's quite an easy solution.

I also went to my country's official Apple distributor, but they just said to send in my week old phone as it must be charging port failure...

Had it charging twice, first time I thought it was charging but realized it wasn’t actually going up - so I restarted my phone and plugged it in overnight.

Woke up this morning to use my phone and it dies on me.

Once plugged in while turned off, that’s when it finally started charging normally.

Anyone else experience this?

Graph shows charging but % doesn’t increase.

iOS16 bug? Seen a few reporting the same issue, only since 16… not that common, but haven’t seen it before 16. Try a restart.

Yeah I suspect it’s an iOS 16 bug - power down + wake via charge seems to resolve it. Just updated to 16.3 also, but nothing in patch notes that I can see.

Had this happen to me once with an iPhone 14 Pro. Worked normal when I plugged it in the next night because I can normally go about 2 days per charge.

Probably a software bug with eco charging or whatever. I turned that setting off after experiencing this.
