You absolutely should do the bare minimum. Doing more than necessary is only advisable if it gets you benefits. Otherwise it's wasted effort.

You work just enough to make them want to keep you around but you don't want to overdo it because they'll give you more work. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be. Plus wasting time in an office is hard work too.
