My first year in College at Shreveport La I saw this movie when it came out.. You likely have no idea of Shreveport unless you are from the area or see the name whenever this is terrible storms coming out of Texas. Compounding things, I was not from Shreveport (a large unremarkable city)...I was from Natchitoches which is famous for Meat Pies and Steel Magnolias. To say that I was unprepared was understatement. Not that I was a rube, just I had to clue of the subject matter. My friends decided that this movie (which had tremendous buzz and an amazing cast) was to be the object of our Friday night boondoggle. I agreed since...hey who doesn't like a "war movie" (bastards) and they were told there was a twist.
To make this short...I was the dumbass that jumped up and yelled "oh shit!"...the entire and mean ENTIRE theatre turned to look at me. I am fairly certain the movie pause...
I didn't recover gracefully...I looked around...tried to sit down but ended up in a nice young ladies lap since I must have jumped...and then had to pop back up.
Good movie.

It was! It absolutely was!
And people were really good about not spoiling it for others.
One of the best elements was that final dream sequence of Forrest Whitaker (That had been haunting Fergus) finally walking into the light as he's tossing the tennis ball....with a Big ole knowing smile on his face!

“… a twist so important that the film's producers pleaded with the media and moviegoers to keep it a secret. That didn't sway the Tribune's Gene Siskel, who gave it away on a special Oscars edition of "Siskel and Ebert." The revelation infuriated Ebert, who called the move "arrogant" and said Siskel should have discussed it beforehand.”

Haha. Watched this last week too. Completely agree with Whitaker, who is more often than not great. Weird choice. The 90s hair dates this film, sadly, although I still think it’s a good film, especially given it’s context

I vividly remember seeing this in the theater. There was word that there was a big twist but I hadn’t heard what it was. When it happened there were a lot of people who immediately walked out. I was amazed how fast they made that decision, got up and left.
