Wondering if anyone knows a source for homemade flour tortillas. I’ve found corn at Tlaxcala but haven’t found flour yet

I’ll check them out, Tlaxcala corn ones are awesome! I’m just a sucker for homemade flour tortillas. I’ll be moving to Killingworth from a town an hour north of Houston so we’re gonna need homemade flour bad. The grocery stores in Texas have tortillarias in the store so they’re made fresh every day

From ATX. Flour tortillas and kolaches aren’t anywhere to be found. The coleslaw is awful. But the italian food is next level and I can’t believe I grew up without knowing what an actual deli sandwhich ought to taste like.
You win some you lose some. My family brings a pack of flout from HEB every time they visit.

Yup kolaches will be the biggest thing missed. My dad knows the owner of blazing fresh in guilford so I may try snagging some of her dough to make kolaches with

What I wouldn't give for fresh tortillas!!

The grocery stores back home in Texas have tortillarias in house so when I move here next year I’m gonna need a fresh tortilla plug

Even when I lived in texas I made my own. I just google a recipe and follow it. The secret for me is letting the dough rest for 20-30 minutes. Helps with texture and flavor.

I tried it the other day but didn’t have a mixer so I tried mixing by hand and that was probably why they were so thick, I couldn’t get them thin enough and when I did press it they contracted again. I’ll have to get a mixer and try again and maybe try a different recipe

Sounds like you overmixed it. Gluten causes it to act Ike that. Don’t use a mixer, hand knead it. You only need to knead it about 10 times. Also seems like your batter is too thick. I’d recommend a little bit more liquid. These should help.
Edit to add: YouTube is great for this as well so you can see what’s it’s supposed to look like.

Okay I’ll give that a shot. That was my first time trying it so I’ll have to watch some YouTube vids next time

Great! It’s one of those recipes that needs a few tweaks but worth it once you get it. Good luck!

We used to buy the cook your own from COSTCO in AZ Here, they don't carry them. All the packaged tortillas taste like chemicals or bitter

Not homemade, but Tlaxcala does sell flour tortillas that are superior to anything I’ve been able to find in standard grocery stores since moving here from Texas a couple months ago. They’re in the fridge there, and properly reheated in a skillet they’re quite good.
Trying to learn to make my own too, but I haven’t got it yet. Just can’t do without quality flour tortillas in my life. People up here have no idea what they’re missing.

They really don’t. I’m visiting my parents and they had mission tortillas and I wanted to throw up lol. I’ll try again, they didn’t have flour when I went last time

Atticus in East Rock had Vista Hermosa (https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjng_S0sp0r/) for a while; not sure if they're still there. They are some of the best "over the counter" tortillas I've found once warmed up

They have really good fresh made tortillas… they have a press right next to the griddle…
Oddly, it is run by asians… so it literally is everything operationally you would see in a chinese takeout spot, except with mexican food! I give the tortillas a 10, over the food is probably a solid 8

Flour tortillas aren’t authentic Mexican so it’s going to be tough to find.
I did find a few spots out west that did them at Mexican restaurants.
Draked1 OP t1_iu42r22 wrote
Good point, it’s definitely more of a texmex thing

this is gonna sound crazy, but i would check if you can buy fresh flour tortillas at fresh taco in fair haven. it's NOT an authentic mexican restaurant (it's actually run by an asian-american family) but they make take-out tex-mex style food with freshly pressed flour tortillas. i bet they would sell you some.
good call on tlaxcala, though. that's my favorite source for corn tortillas in the city.
