Hi all,

I just got a summer internship in Whippany and I want to get insight as to where to live. I have absolutely no experience with New Jersey or any of its areas.

I have the opportunity to live in Madison at Farleigh Dickinson. I heard Madison is a pretty nice/cute town, and it's really close to the office so it will cut down my commute, but I'm worried there isn't much to do there.

I've also been looking at some apartments in Montclair which I heard was also a really nice town, but am open to other suggestions.

Would it be a bad idea to live around Newark? Commute would be able 25-40 min depending on traffic, but I go to college in a small town so I would love to live in an actual city and also be really close to nyc.

Budget is around $1250-1600/mo. Thanks and let me know if y'all have any more suggestions!

Madison is near Morristown. Plenty to do there.

Madison is great. Train to Morristown/NYC. Lots to do in the area.

With your budget you won't find much at all, unless you can find a roommate situation. And as you only need it for the summer, you may also have trouble finding a short term rental, so I would seriously consider FDU, as I'm going to guess it may be cheaper. I live further out, and rents for 1BR where I am start at 1750 and up. Madison and the surrounding area is a lot more, which is why I moved further west. But Madison is nice, and Morristown isn't all that far away. and the train from Madison on that line goes right into NYC.

As far as not much to do, i guess it depends on exactly what you're looking TO do. Bars etc., Morristown is close and there are tons of places. You can take the train right into NYC from Madison, and you can also drive to the shore probably in an hour or so, without major traffic.

Thanks for the write up! Forgot to mention that I’m probably living with a friend so budget may be more flexible for a 2br. But yeah “worst case” I just end up living at fdu which is no big deal.

Good luck! like I said, you might have trouble finding a short term rental, most complexes, mine included WILL do it but the'll charge more.

If you have the option at FDU I'd take it (my alma mater), you won't find much under 1800 honestly. Madison is super close to Morristown where there is plenty nightlife and activities.

Parsippany is close to Whippany though and had many apartment options when I lived there back in the day.

Montclair has a lot of restaurants and bars but it is very expensive and tends to cater more to young families.

Gonna need a roommate, a one BR not in a shitty location will probably run you closer to 2k, maybe a bit less

As others have pointed out, Madison is a great town, and it's 5 minutes from Morristown, which is a happening place, with lots of bars, restaurants, and MPAC (Mayo Performing Arts Center).

Madison is a college town, there is plenty to do there for the under 30 (or so) population. Your budget is not enough for your own apartment, so your other options will be required.

Are you at MetLife by any chance? That’s where I’ll be and I plan on staying at St Elizabeth’s University in Morristown.

Hey I’m at Barclays! What’s the fee at St Elizabeth’s? And could you provide the contact info for housing! Thanks!

$1250/month in Montclair? Not going to happen.

You can't really get anything for that low without living in the ghetto.

You'll probably be paying at least 1900-2000 per month in any decent town after all the fees are added on.

I definitely recommend West/South Orange, and MORRISTOWN/Morris Plains.

To be honest, if you get a good living situation in Madison, take it. It's only 10-15 minutes from Downtown Morristown (which has tons of restaurants, bars and amazing walkable streets)
