I thought passports were the property of the issuing country.

It varies from country to country, but generally speaking governments only own the passport when its valid. Once its cancelled or expires, ownership passes to whoever is currently in possession of it.

Vintage passports are a reasonably common collectors item, and it appears as though this particular passport has been sold several times prior to this - all without objection from the Egyptian government or Sadat's family.

Its come up for auction before, and obviously wasnt important enough to be their heritage then.. sorry but this just feels like the family being fussy to stay relevant here.

His family once used the producers of the movie I Love You Man because one of the characters had a dog named Anwar Sadat. Maybe they’re just sensitive about stuff related to their family and simply missed the previous auctions.

They are trying to leverage a position of government as a means to regain something that seemingly, whether they like it or not, ended up for auction legitimately. Ill never be okay with a government official using their position for personal means, especially when the circumstances lean to this being a case where they have no right to do so.

Passport collectors know that the passport of Ramesses II is the Jewel of the Nile

A diplomatic passport should be destroyed after it expires. The Egyptian embassy would have destroyed it if they followed protocol. It likely ended up in a burn bad which was dumped in the trash. Unless theft can be established this is a story of one man’s garbage being another man’s 40k.

Seems like a private document that shouldn’t be allowed to be sold unless the seller can establish Sadat gave it to someone and said it was okay to sell it.

I get that’s he is (was) a public figure but that’s still a private document. I’d feel the same way about a birth certificate or medical records or an old driver’s license or whatever.

Seems like the only way it could come into someone other than the family’s possession is through nefarious means or accidental loss.

Well, he may need it for his afterlife journey through Duat, the Egyptian underworld!

Who is in the market for Sadat’s passport?

Edit: I stand corrected. There are a lot of redditors in the market for Sadat’s passport. Better start saving up.
