I’ve looked in a lot of Manhattan thrift shops like Salvation Army, goodwill and independent guys and found two things. They’re either stripped of anything interesting by resellers or they’re overpriced. Just my experience
It's been awhile but my go tos were metropolis vintage and L train vintage. There's a ton of vintage and thrift stores in that area in general, the more mainstream ones being buffalo exchange, beacons closet and crossroads trading for consignment shopping. Also fun to check out search & destroy.
There’s plenty of good finds. I’ve found tons of wool, silk, basics, denim for like $20. You jsut have to know where to look and take more time than you would in a regular retail store
In Manhattan there’s a couple of thrift stores by the new school that has good stuff from all the fashion students. I like beacons closet which is a little more pricey than a Salvation Army but you find more out there stuff. L train is more like basics and is cheaper. You’ll find a bunch of stores in Williamsburg/bushwick
I once drifted a few sweaters which led to a mini beg bug scare. Luckily was able to catch the little aholes that same night so no infestation. If you're going to do drifting I strongly suggest you isolate the items and thoroughly clean and disinfect them asap.
