Because DOE custodial engineers are required to maintain the premises.

If this is impacting your quality of life, you can contact the school's principal or your community board. Realistically unless you organize or you're very wealthy/well-connected, you're probably SOL.

On the bright side, there's probably only a month or two of leaf-falling season - you can look up the trees on your block to gauge how much longer til the trees finish shedding.

Custodial engineers? Call them what they are, maintenance or janitor.

That is their literal civil service title. I think that’s the most appropriate way to refer to someone’s professional title, but if you disagree that’s cool.

I think it’s disrespectful to actual engineers who worked hard and put the hours into school to gain that title. Last time I checked you only need a HS diploma to be a janitor/ maintenance

I suggest you take that up with DOE and DCAS. I'm pretty sure that title was proposed and accepted by a few agencies on both the city and state level.

Probably item # 357 of things the custodial staff has to do before the school doors open. Things pile up if they wait to do certain things later in the day

Yep, this too.

There's a ton of things that have to get done before the building staff and students start pouring in.

Gotta make sure that there are no discarded needles under the leaves.

two things:

  1. i don't think you've ever used a leaf blower

  2. raking leaves off a city sidewalk is not an effective use of your time

Agreed. I was a custodian at a pre-school when I was younger, and if I had to rake the parking lot it would take me around 2 hours. Using a leaf blower it took about half an hour.

Not to mention plastic or even metal rake against concrete/stone doesn’t do wonders for the tool’s longevity

[deleted] t1_is0jjoe wrote

plus OP thinks the sound of scraping metal on a sidewalk for 2 hours is preferable to a blower for maybe 20 minutes. Its out of touch with reality

Like a leaf blower doesn't require maintenance...

dhdhdfjffjj t1_is0ipev wrote

Of course it does, but it’s not destroying it every time you use it

2

International-Lie795 t1_is0ku0f wrote

Yea but that’s maybe once every year or two, you’ll go through a rake a month if you’re using it on concrete.

k1lk1 t1_is0ev2f wrote

For real. There's a lot of idealization about having a sidewalk or yard completely clean in a way that only leaf blowers can do. When in reality a once over with a rake is completely sufficient unless you're hosting a royal wedding or something.

Can’t use lawn equipment before 8am. Call 311.

Unless they changed it it’s 7am, and pretty sure public spaces and government buildings are exempt from these sort of rules
