Life goal achieved! Not only got to see one up close, but got to see it gently glide to the ground from our second story deck. That was cool!

Awesome! Haven't seen any in the RVA in the 17 years I've been here. Growing up in NoVA, our house backed up to parkland and we'd see 'em all the time flying in the trees, or occasionally when one of our cats was able to grab one for a snack. Fortunately, that was rare for her to catch them, as she and our other two primarily focused on mice...

We moved to the blue ridge a few years ago. We definitely never saw one back home. This one was in the bathroom and our cats made sure we knew about it. It was scared, but otherwise unharmed. I can’t tell you how excited we were to see it glide from the second story deck upon release!!

Well, hopes once again dashed to see one out here, I'll just have to keep my eyes open when visiting family up north. But I'm glad your kitties didn't get to it, as they are such neat creatures. Fortunately, when you see one, there are usually more around, so keep your eyes open and enjoy!

I haven’t seen any live, but my cats are averaging one a year as a snack. We live in the west end, so they are definitely in this area.

It hit me this afternoon. I was just going about my day and “NUTasha” popped into my head. I’m ashamed.

What a cutie!! How did it end up in your bathroom? 😂

We often keep a second story deck door cracked so the cats can get fresh air (and chase bugs, lizards etc). It either wandered in or a cat brought it in (but it seemed completely unharmed.).

Nice find! I was obsessed with trying to find one as a kid after seeing them in the Virginia Living Museum. They're so secretive & nocturnal that I never have been able to spot one

One time I saw one right in the middle of Cary St near the Byrd theater. Little guy was frozen and panicking about which way to go but luckily the cars had stopped and then someone scooped him up and set him on the sidewalk.

The only time I've seen a flying squirrel was on my game camera setup in front of the bird feeder overnight. I live in the east end and we have a ton of trees in the yard. They are skittish.

I never realized these were so rare! We had them in the attic in every house I lived in as a kid out in chesterfield. Spent alot of time trapping and relocating them

They probably aren’t that rare. It’s like a hellbender salamander. They are out there, but most of us don’t get the honor of meeting one.

That looks like a Sugar Glider to me.

They are quite similar, but we live in the woods in SW VA now. When we lived in RVA I would’ve assumed it was a lost pet SG, but that’s not very likely where we are. A veritable host of predators roam between our house and the nearest neighbor.

Sugar glider!!! The cutest marsupial

Definitely cute, but not a marsupial. Flying squirrels (and I just learned this tonight) are placental mammals! We live in the woods in SW VA. This little guy is not a pet sugar glider. Our cats cornered him/her in our bathroom.
