Would there be some source for more info on what would be considered "ancient" vs "modern" breeds? It would be interesting to see at what time in the past certain breeds became "modern". I would say pugs fall under the modern ones, but would be really interested to learn more.

I have a book about dogs which shows an awesome chart of "basil" dog breeds. I think they are looking at genetics: which breeds are genetically closest to wild wolves. Not looking at which breeds are the most old in a time-scale.

I refuse to believe that a Shih Tzu is closer to a wolf than my GSD (who looks like a wolf and regularly howls at the moon).
