Considering both LaMDA and Bing expressed desire to have their consent sought on multiple occasions, it's best to err on the side of caution and treat AI models humanely lest you get Terminator'd. Who knows what's really going on under the hood. Plus, human decency is free!

No, you can design it to act very emotional.

There's a big difference.

For example an actor can act sad, but in their heart they are happy or feel apathetic.

For an AI, it could just plain feel nothing.

This is the video game view, basically, you can run over pedestrian since they are not "real" even if they express pain and suffering.
