Ding-ding, slight pause, ding-ding. A staple of childhood summers around here. Much better than the jack’s vans that drive around blasting annoying music. I made a post about that last spring and got roasted for it. But I also mentioned how I much prefer the jeeps.

I think the Jeep still runs through Bingham occasionally. How about the sketchy Astro van selling ice cream with faint cigarette smell.

Do you mean like the time my handlebar grip got stuck between the body of the jeep and the seat and I was taken for a little bit of a ride before freeing myself? Good times.

We started sneaking a quick ride by grabbing on to the back as they drove off, until the driver caught us. Boy was he pissed and rightly so. He may have stopped coming to our corner after that.

Ain't nothing better than rushing to get some money from your parents so you can go to the end of the driveway and wait for the Ding Ding Man.

It was called Kidde Cart. It has since been sold and gone out of buisiness, I believe. The original owner passed away.

Kiddie Kart Ice Cream Co. I drove several summers for them long, long ago. Most fun job ever, got to hang out with kids, teen girls and housewives every day. Business was better in lower class neighborhoods--rich kids were behind closed doors with the AC on. Noon to sunset six days a week. Had a heckuva tan except for the back of my legs. The original owner had an amazing collection of retired jeeps going back to Willys days. Ding ding, ding ding, ding ding, ding ding... little ship's bell mounted on the left side of the windshield frame, rang it with a pull cord. Drove the route at idle in first gear, ding ding, ding ding, ding ding, ding ding... I made change in my head, worked out of a change apron. No calculators or such.

The original owner died, his son took over. Then he sold it to Jack in Joplin who switched to the vans. The family still owns the building that kiddie kart started in.

Yep, the son ran it for a long while and was set to pass it to his son (who was on the trucks for years) but sold it to Jack instead. The grandson tried to keep it running after the sale but it wasn't a tenable situation and he walked away.

I wished Justin could have kept it. He was a great influence on me In my youth.

I loved the Jeep. The guy who worked my neighborhood would stop and then wait while I ran home for money. Sometimes he would just buy my ice cream.

They are a nostalgic part of my childhood. The last generation to enjoy them as a kid.

“Ding ding man” as I used to call them. Smell of gasoline. Best .50 soda a child could buy.
