Yup this product line has always had military roots. These types of devices have been deployed by the US military, they are very rugged and reliable to my understanding

So they sent hardware to save stuff to the cloud? One would think files so important to The nation would be backed up already? I mean backed up files isn’t a new phenomenon and neither is cloud for that matter.

Might have a few redundant facilities within the country. Normally big enough to avoid widespread acts of god. But all potential targets when at war

Ah yes. Back up your national secrets to a cloud owned by a company based in the US. I wonder why governments all over the world aren't doing this more.....

I'd imagine it was encrypted. There are encryption schemes that allow k-of-n parties to decrypt, which makes the recovery damage resistant but still secure against a small number (<k) traitors.

An information security plan consist of multiple layers.
If it starts with 'it's physically located in a place where another country can pull the plug' then the plan for your secret services' datacenter simply dies then and there...

If the storage system itself is outside your security perimeter, you need encryption.
If you're worried about the reliability of the storage system, you need redundancy. In this case, multiple copies in clouds all over the world.

That friend who came into your house and installed those murder weapon sentries to protect you from your nasty Neighbors and supplied you with weapons and money to kill that pesky neighbour who invaded your backyard and killed your wife and kids.
Only a true friend would do that for you.

Ah yes, Trump was such a good friend of Europe. I'm sure the American public will never be so stupid to elect another republican moron, right? right..?
Europe is an longstanding ally of the US. Nobody is putting anything anywhere that can be PATRIOT-acted and governments are building their own private clouds and eating those expenses due to the national security risks. We've even started to fund our own armies (which is good) because we can no longer trust the red half of the US government.
So downvote all you want, but it's just plain ignorance to think all governments should have this in place and that it's easy nowadays.
