I think you misunderstand the important world here, Media. He was very likely the first, or at least the first to make it popular to be both a famous recording musician as well as also be a famous film star. Meaning his work was on some sort of media, Film and Records. That would not be the case with play actors who are even now not commonly record on either media.

LikeEpisodeVIThemost t1_irw6qnk wrote

I just think it willfully ignores media that came before. Books, paintings, poetry, songwriting etc etc all existed before and are considered media. Yeah he probably did a lot for films and music but he's not the first.

Kinda moving the bar's here since you just said musicians and play actors. Since you brought it up and in continued fairness, most of those cases the average person would have little to no idea or access to all forms of media that any person created. It isn't until true mass media that you see household names become increasingly more common.

Denise Crosby, Tasha Yar on Star Trek, didn’t really know him growing up and tried to use a different last name when she went to theater school so as to not ride on his fame.

She claims her classmates never let it go though and eventually she just decided to lean in and see if she could use it to her advantage.

My father, back in the early 70s, told me that if I ever married a black ("colored") girl, he would disown me. I could be friends, but don't ever marry one. Bing was born in 1903 and my father was born in 1922, so roughly the same era.

Studios didn't like the idea of Bing recording his shows for later playback, said nobody wanted to listen to not-live radio shows.

Bing insisted, and set the stage for the rest of the industry.
