Hello All,

I live in upstate NY and am interested in potentially moving to Vermont, I live close enough that I can travel to VT for a day trip. Is there anything I should try to experience that is uniquely Vermont?

Thanks in Advance!

I'd start with a small town Town Meeting Day, and go from there.

Well, there’s the touristy stuff which you can google, and that’s fine if you’re coming for a visit. Where in upstate NY are you? Are you planning on buying a home up in the woods here, somewhere? If so, take a day this winter and drive around on some of the unpaved “charming” Vermont side roads up in the hills. If you’ve been on a logging trail in NY, then you know what a typical rural Vermont “road” is like!😄 Know where you’re going in advance, because cell service is spotty at best. If you enjoy stuff like that, welcome!

Grocery stores. As someone who recently moved from central NY, I can tell you that food's more expensive here.

Come for the arguments about firetrucks and gravel, stay for the donuts and rolling your eyes at your dumb ass neighbors who don't know shit about either but somehow also get to vote.

"I was just wondering if maybe the road foreman was here and could tell us more about the flail mower that's in the budget on page 37 and how that's different from the flail mower that they are currently using?"

Go to an inspection station and find out everything you didn't know was wrong with your car.

Vermont has been very good to me and my family. I came up here after leaving the military in 1981 and never doubted this is where I belong.

Having said that, Vermont is populated by humans. There is nothing uniquely Vermont about Vermonters other then the fact we're from the state of Vermont.

What's important to you?

I'm sure that Vermonters will roll their eyes, but I'm from Boston and my wife and I fell in love with Vermont doing a random day trip there to visit Woodstock. It was during the pandemic once things started opening up, so I picked a random place in Vermont (Gillingham's) and we loaded up the kids and dog for a road trip; we've been there about a half dozen times since.

Honestly, you should be slightly scared. All of these things mentioned are very true and hard for people who have lived here for years with numerous connections. It's even harder for people moving to here.

I would not even think of moving here without a vehicle in very good shape, a well paying job, and a lease on an apartment already signed.

Apartment will be signed before moving. Reliable car, check. Just need snow tires. And by the time I move I will have 8 months of expenses saved up in case I can’t find anything.
