Man, I see people running up them. I'm definitely not sure I could even walk the whole thing without a break.

Yes they are those actual steps.

(You may know, I don’t know if other people reading know.)

Once you’re at the top, make sure to check out the two life size Transformers statues nearby.

People have caught demons from playing around on these steps. Be careful.

It just occurred to me that the shot of Joaquin Phoenix coming down the steps in “Joker” must have been an allusion to these steps.

Back in the 80's my dumb ass would climb along the fence (top of left wall in photo) and sit on top of the arch platform above the bottom of the steps to drink with buddies. It was about 2.5 feet wide and had a slight peak in the middle for run off. We would split a six pack and the rule was you had to stay sitting there till you finished your three beers. We were fucking idiots. Little has changed.

It actually happened in Mt Rainer. The house was tore down in the 80s and they put a park there.

The story of these steps is that in the era of streetcars, there were two competing lines serving Georgetown. One ran across the bridge to Roslyn & Northern Virginia, and it terminated at the streetcar barn, still located next to the steps. The other line, into DC, ran along Prospect St, at the top of the bluff. The steps were the only way to “transfer” between these lines.

Imagine making that climb every day going to work downtown. Hell, indeed.

No one cares about Georgetown anymore. It was a cool place with fun bars in the 90’s. But now, it’s tourists, chain places and meh
