That should be included in tourist brochures: "The Great Barrier Reef, just like any other coral reef".

Well that's just fracking sad.... I'm Australian, and I don't oppose it. I don't know what a U.N. "in danger" listing will do to benefit the reef.... Will they pay for increased scientific research? Will they stop any dumbarse oil companies from trying to drill there?

Possibly impact tourism, which is exactly why the government opposes it. They don't want a hit to their tax revenue.

It's worth remembering the Turnball LNP gave the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, a staff of 6 in 2018, $443 million it didn't ask for, instead of the Barrier Reef Marine Authority, who has been doing excellent work since 1975, with a staff of 175 at the time. Where that $443 million was spent is unclear. In July 2021 Sussan Ley, the LNP Federal Enviromental minister urgently flew and convinced 9 of the 21 Unesco members to remove the Great Barrier Reef from their endangered list. She basically bribed some of them. Of course we need to do better, but there's at least half a billion dollars put in peoples pockets that should have been spent on preserving the reef.

> The Australian government expressed its opposition Tuesday to a recommendation by a United Nations-backed mission that the Great Barrier Reef be added to a list of "In danger" World Heritage sites, warning of the significant impact climate change is having on the world's largest coral reef ecosystem.

> Australian Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said Tuesday that Canberra would make clear to UNESCO that there is no need to single out the Great Barrier Reef in this way, arguing that every coral reef in the world is affected by climate change.

> Canberra has fought off a number of attempts to assign "In danger" status to the Great Barrier Reef since it was listed as a World Heritage site in 1981, fearing a potential impact on the reef's tourism industry that is said to support 64,000 jobs and contributes AU$6.4 billion to the nation's economy.
