I'd venture a guess that like Toms River, Staten Island is a conservative area in an otherwise liberal area.

I user ad block plus on my laptop. If ads start playing, I click the ABP logo at the top-right of my screen - it tells me to reload the page, and ads go away.

But I'm an old guy on a laptop. I don't know how or if ABP works on smartphones or tablets.
