Even more incredible that the movie was made at the same time the novel was still being written and hence the subtle differences(going to Saturn vs. Jupiter)

The moon and Jupiter were in close proximity yesterday so there's a high possibility that it is

Have you rules out clouds? Wispy, high altitude, difficult to see at night until they block the light of a star/moon etc..

If they were traveling without a massive body nearby, they may collect some mirco satellites of their own, but orbiting earth.. highly improbable
