They both have their own appeals and things in between. Ellicott city has the historic old ec and the many nature hiking paths around it. It is also the most cultural diverse area within Howard county, from Asian markets and more as you drive up towards Catonsville.

Columbia has the mall and merryweather area which is known for Concerts, seasonal drive through events such as the Christmas symphony lights, and the Toby theatre. There are plenty of different hiking trails and nature reserves, all throughout. There’s other communities you might like around Columbia as well, such as maple lawn, Fulton, which in my experience has a great community that interacts with each other through the many restaurants and retail buildings within the area. Next to that and still around the Columbia area is Clarksville, one of the more expensive areas around river hill. Plenty of modern homes surrounded by nature and farmland, and town areas.

Winter doesn’t actually start until around Christmas, fall is when it looks best. People are nicer towards Baltimore than DC.

Luckily traffic isn’t as bad as LA, but will still find a way to tick you off. When driving at night even on the highways you have to be vigilant about deers and hidden troopers. As far as good eats, you’ll have to go to either cities because finding food comparable to LA is a dime a dozen in Columbia. Our mini ktown is Elliott city. Glen burnie is like your equivalent of skid row, not a lot of homeless people, but many druggies and far right conservatives who are batshit.

It’s snowboarding season, so look up wisp or whitetail, the drives aren’t too far and it’s usually what we’re up to when we can’t fish.

Decadent in maple lawn is good if you want homebaked treats and top-shelf beer on tap.

Rt. 40 has all the Korean cafes/bakeries... Shila is usually considered the lowest, Tour le Jour is pretty good... Idk if cafe benne is still around, but there are plenty of good choices.

Downtown Laurel also has a more contemporary cafe.
