What's depersonalization?
WaliBoi OP t1_ivo7i4b wrote
To answer your question, it's where you feel outside your body or that your world isn't real.
There are different causes for it, but they usually occur when you have a mental illness or taking meds for a mental illness (correctly with side effects or incorrectly taken.)
I've been experiencing depersonalization and dissociation lately due to my schizoaffective disorder, so my depersonalization may appear differently to other people's experience with this symptom.
I hope that answers your question.

I haven’t looked it up in a while, probably because I’d rather not be reminded, but the doctor that oversaw my taper said I had derealization as well, which is exactly what it sounds like. But I think both diagnoses overlap? All I know is I grit my teeth whenever I hear someone is taking multiple benzos daily. They should be administered judiciously, or as a last resort. Tolerance is quick, even when not abusing them. Benzo withdrawal feels like the end of the world, and unlike hard drugs like opiates, meth, cocaine, etc., if you don’t taper it can kill you, just like alcohol cessation. GABAnergic drugs are no joke.
That’s why this artwork connected with me.

Thank you for your reply. Can't say I've ever experienced something like that, though it definitely sounds interesting, almost like the experiences of people who take certain recreational drugs; though I'm sure it's always unpleasant.

Sometimes it's better to ask people who have actually been through something than just Googling a book definition.

Really cool portrayal!
The same happened to me less than 2 years ago, still struggling with it. Be careful when tapering off meds folks!
RealMudflapper t1_ivm13c1 wrote
Hang in there! It took me a year to taper off completely and another year for me to feel nearly normal. Finding a new doctor who prescribed Mirtazapine helped a ton. It's a non-addictive anxiety medication that has no abuse potential and helps you sleep. I can't recommend it enough. It's actually used in Europe quite a bit for drug and alcohol withdrawal but it's not as well known here in the US.

This is so beautiful. As an artist myself I'm genuinely astounded how you even managed to do this, i can't figure it out. It's it 3d? Some sort of layering of effects on top of a painting? I don't think people fully understand how technical this type of art is, its actually incredible. Amazing work
facubkc t1_ivncg52 wrote
It's Photoshop for sure , liquify , playing with gradients and layers masks with brushes.
toom00ns t1_ivnctz1 wrote
Yeah definitely. It really shows how proficient they are with the program and it turned out fantastic. I can't even begin to understand the types of effects they used yet
facubkc t1_ivnd4zu wrote
On a technical level this is not something amazing per say what is makes it amazing is the use of colors , framing and the detail on the texture since it evokes a strong feeling of loosing yourself. But if I have to guess is not that this has a lot of layers because one must be the base image , a couple ones for the rainbow gradients colors , one for the eye , a couple curves or shadow/highlights layers and one for the stuff around the eye . A lot of time was spent on shaping the base black and white image that looks like those acrylic abstract art paintings.
toom00ns t1_ivnertc wrote
Yeah I think you nailed it . The texturing is what's really getting me. There's just so much detail and texture in the black and white base like you said, it's hard to believe someone created it. I'm sure there's some sort of distortion to create all the linear noise around it?
facubkc t1_ivnfzkg wrote
It's a combination of a lot of processes if I had to guess but "Liquify" definitely played a mayor role here. Here are some video tutorials that may give you an idea on how this was made:

This is amazing and that texture is so good for digital art. I still struggle with good texture brushes on procreate.
facubkc t1_ivnc94f wrote
Well Procreate must be very limited compared to Photoshop, cause I'm 99% this was made with Photoshop.

Perfect. And depersonalization is awful; I had it when tapering off anxiety meds years ago.
