Only if they start crying or have a break down. "there, there" is best I got.

In emotional situations, yes. If either they are emotional and I am trying to support them and searching for the right words to reassure them, or when I am emotional about htings myself and trying to find the right words to explain what bothers me in a way where I hurt other people as little as possible.

Or are you asking about awkward silences in normal conversations, that happen when you put socially inept people together?

Yes especially when they are dealing with the difficult situations. But I also think one of the hallmarks of a great relationship is also being comfortable sitting in silence. Just enjoying being around each other whether you're watching TV or you're reading a book.
