Hi Reddit,

I am very desperately searching for a replacement of my favourite hoodie that I've had for over 10 years an that is slowly starting to fall apart now. (There are detail photos in the album on imgur as well). The label only says 100% wool, hand wash only but it is nothing like the other wool clothes I've had. Even after more than 100 washes (in my washing machine with all my other clothes) it did not shrink and it shows no sign of pilling. I remember that after the first wash my whole flat smelled like a sheep barn, but that has disappeared after it was dry.

Unfortunately samsoe samsoe has discontinued the production of it and all other 100% wool clothes that I've tried after were nothing like it. (Either very itchy, started pilling fast or not as soft).

I hope you can give me any hints on how to find something similar. I would be forever grateful because I rellay love this thing. If someone has the "Enno Zip Hoodie" By Samsoe Samsoe lying around I would of course pay good money for it.

Guessing merino wool. Merino is soft and doesn’t shrink as much sometimes. Wooly brand has hoodies. Duckworth is higher end and all made in USA.

Try looking for it on poshmark. I just bought a deadstock wool sweater that is the exact same as the one I’ve been wearing for 10 years now. Now I have at least 10 years of sweater ahead of me, though the original is still in pretty good shape too.

I've never owned a Merino hoodie, but from the research I've done the material is overrated and not very durable. It pills, gets holes, and stretches if you wear a backpack or strap on it (even the very expensive ones).
This may be all wools and not just merino, but they seem to definitely not be BIFL if worn regularly.

In the last 10 years I wore that thing on every flight and at least 50 days a year (probably more than that). It did not stretch, shrink or rip and show no pilling. And it is 100% wool so not all wool is the same

Most likely merino, but not all merino is created equally, many merino sweaters are going to be too thin and will pull because they’re just made the way that base layers are made, a thicker merino should be fine though, and a merino and regular wool combo is most durable but a bit scratchier

It is probably merino wool, pretty much the most common out there nowadays. Simply because it's widely available and comfortable for the average consumer.

I highly (I mean highly) do not recommend you going down the rabbit hole of sheep wool and that from other animals. You'll go crazy trying to understand the characteristics of different breeds/specials and construction methods.

That said, you'd be better off looking at companies based off of their reputation. In general, merino wool is commonly used in anything from a $30 hoodie to several hundred (even thousand) dollars. Merino itself tends not to be very durable and pills extremely easy. Some companies have been able to figure out the magical formula for it, most haven't.
