Hello!

I'm visiting Cambridge in a couple of weeks for a friend's birthday and I was wondering if anyone might have suggestions for a good bakery where I could order a custom cake. In particular, if anyone knows of one that offers pudding filling (it's his favourite) as an option, I would really appreciate it. Bonus points if they take orders online or by email, since I'm in a different country.

Cheers!

Flour’s Boston Cream Pie is filled with a lightened crème patisserie, which I’d argue is pretty close to a pudding. I’m reasonably confident you can place an order online or via email.

Royal Pastry Shop in E Cambridge did a fantastic job for daughter's cake. Tasty, light, artfully decorated. Reasonably priced. People were asking where we got it afterwards. Not sure about pudding filled but you can certainly inquire! http://www.royalpastryshop.com/

Flour is probably the best bakery in the area that can do something like this. Lyndell's is good (& def cheaper) but a step below.

I would not say above / below. They're different kinds of places. Flour is far newer (opened in 2000), fancier, pricier, does a lot other than pastries. Lyndell's is much older (opened in 1887), traditional, less expensive, focused on pastries, and pretty high volume. Both are good but if I had the OP's needs I would choose Lyndell's. (Royal Pastry is also an older, more traditional bakery similar to Lyndell's in style.)

Well, Royal is old-school Italian style, and Lyndell's is old-school Jewish style, but yeah. Both longtime favorites of mine.

In my humble opinion, Flour is overrated, but to each his own.

Side by side, the cupcakes from Flour are much much better than Lyndell's. I've had both dozens of times. I stand behind what I said. I don't need a history lesson.

Has anyone ever splurged on one of the amazing custom creations at Oakleaf? Do they taste as good as they look?

Market basket in Chelsea does an amazing job. Cheap and super customizable.

Formaggio Kitchen could probably put something very nice together for you. Won't be cheap, but it will make an impression. And be delicious.
