Not technically Columbia but Savage Mill has 2 great coffee house options.

Brewing Good Coffee is a small cozy vegan coffee shop right on Foundry street. They just opened more indoor seating at the storefront next door and they roast their own beans so the place smells incredible. They also make some vegan food as well for snacking. Parking can be a hassle if you come midday though.

There is also a small Roggenart at the mill entrance closer to Foundry Street. This used to be a french bakery even before Roggenart moved in (R.I.P. Bonaparte) so there are some nice vibes with the interior seating. Coffee is not as good as Brewing Good imo but the pastries are a nice treat and it's slightly less expensive.

Either of these would be nice for a first date, and if it goes really well you can continue the date by walking around the mill and checking out the neat stores inside.

*There's also a nice walking trail behind the Mill that follows the Patuxant River to keep in mind for -not- first dates. Because taking someone into the woods as a first date is a bit of a red flag. I see a lot of couples taking selfies on the bridge around sunset, and a TON of wedding photographers around there too so you know it has romantic vibes.

Roggenart @ Savage Mill wins on smells alone. You walk in and you are assaulted with all the best pastry and bakery smells. It is what cozy smells like.

As for the prices, I'm not sure what 'less expensive' means anymore. It's about as expensive as everywhere else, but I also haven't been to Brewing Good yet.

Brewing Good gives 10% of their profits to animal shelters, which means a cup there will be more expensive than Roggenart. But it's for a good cause so I don't mind the price difference. The owners are really devoted to animal welfare and love when the neighborhood dogs stop by.

Or you can buy a pound of beans for like <10$ and make many many coffees. And you get to control your sugar intake while at it, cuz coffeeshops like to make every damn drink into like 1/3 of daily caloric intake.

Can you share the location for the trail behind the mill. I would be interested

Walking from the mill, cross over the Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge and follow the Savage Mill Trail to the right along the river. It’s about a half mile or so to the end. Some decent spots to climb down onto rocks and sit with a nice views.

I second the thought about it not being a first date thing.

The entrance is between Gorman road and the Bollman Bridge. It's not a very long walk unless you decide to trek through the wilderness past the end of the path. It's great in the summer because it's usually like 10 degrees cooler than normal due to shade and the river.

Not quite Columbia, but the Old Mill Cafe is nice just across the bridge from Old Ellicott City. Or Matcha Time or Syriana cafe. If things go well, you could go for a walk along Main Street.

If OP goes to Syriana, I recommend the falafel, hummous, and if they have it, the kibbe. Ask for them to warm up the pita bread. Good food.

If you want a relaxed local place, mad city coffee in hickory ridge is nice. Decent breakfast/lunch food too it’s pretty small though FYI. Roggenart is another spot for coffee, it’s like a French bakery with fresh pastries and bread. More seating than mad city

Mad City Coffee is good. There’s also a Starbucks in the mall, then you can walk around and talk, go in stores, etc

There is actually a Starbucks in the Macy's now (weird) but the Nordstrom cafe has always been my go-to
