Local banks as a mortgage lender?

My wife and I are looking to buy a house in the East Hampton/Marlborough area and we've heard you can get better rates with local banks vs big banks. Are there any local banks in that area or around Middletown that people have had good luck with as their mortgage lender?

Any info/advice helps as we are first time home buyers.

Torrington Savings Bank was great to work with. They also hold and service the loans in house and do not resell. I highly recommend them!

My first mortgage was through McCue mortgage, which is local out of new britain. I have no complaints, over ten years and they never sold my loan were easy to deal with. My only frustration was their lack of technology/online access, but that has likely changed a bit since I used them.

Definitely see if you qualify for any first time homebuyer programs. Some banks have their own but also look into CHFA first-time homebuyer products!

Look at credit unions. Northeast Federal, Nutmeg, American Eagle to.name a few

Seconding the recommendation for Liberty Bank, they were great to work with for a conventional 15yr mortgage.

Also, a bunch of years in and they're still the ones servicing the mortgage. That's been very smoothly-run, and I've never had any issuees. Escrow payments to my town were always done promptly, the website is easy to use for setting up auto-pay and paperless statements, etc etc.

I didn’t find that to be true, but I got a decent rate offer from a credit union. Total Mortgage is based out of CT if you go with a bigger company and want to support local.
