Unpopular opinion to many, but I'm going to say it anyway.

No assault rifle, no dead cops.

**update. I have not seen any news yet tonight, but I have a few cops in my family and I know people at St. Francis. Maybe news is already reporting this.

Fat murderer and his brother were removed from Bleachers in Bristol by the police. He and his brother went home, and killer gets all his tactical gear on and intends to go back to Bleachers and shoot the place up. Brother tries to stop him, gets shot. Thier mother lives next door, hears the commotion and calls 911 about a domestic disturbance. Fatso probably hears the police coming and decides to just hang there and shoot cops instead.

No assault rifle, no dead cops.

No such thing as an assault rifle.

Right. Snowflakes get triggered by “assault rifle”. For those watching at home, you need to call it a semiautomatic long gun.

flatdanny t1_is9zodw wrote

No matter what you call it, it kills people efficiently at distances greater than handguns.

Although hand guns can be effective as a weapon of mass murder, I doubt the Las Vegas Shooter would have killed 60 and injured 867 with a hand gun.

ccwilson84 t1_isas4jy wrote

All rifles do this. That is the point of a rifle, it has longer range.

flatdanny t1_isasugb wrote

To kill people more efficiently. That is the point. Thats why so many mass shooters use them.

a longer range to do what?

ccwilson84 t1_iskdt7j wrote

To put bullets into targets. Mine are usually for animals that I want to consume, but if my life is threatened I have no issues using it to put bullets into people who would try to do harm.

Rifles have longer ranges and much more power than handguns. This has always been the case, and as long as the laws of physics hold, it will always be the case.

there's a bunch of words for folks who are armed and ready to kill others and they're generally not flattering.

1

ccwilson84 t1_isqn0l2 wrote

Well, if someone breaks into my home or place of business with intent to do harm, I am not going to be bothered by those words.

As a test, if someone breaks into your home to kill you, you use your unflattering words, and I'll use my armed and ready weapon. Afterward we can discuss the outcome over beers if we are both able.

I have twice used my weapon to prevent potentially violent robberies of my property and feel comfortable that my approach is better than resorting to hand to hand combat or less suitable tools.

"Statistically that gun of yours is most likely to kill the owner so if you want to play your tough guy numbers games, be my guest.

"Results. After adjustment, individuals in possession of a gun were 4.46 (P < .05) times more likely to be shot in an assault than those not in possession. Among gun assaults where the victim had at least some chance to resist, this adjusted odds ratio increased to 5.45 (P < .05).
Conclusions. On average, guns did not protect those who possessed them from being shot in an assault. Although successful defensive gun uses occur each year, the probability of success may be low for civilian gun users in urban areas. Such users should reconsider their possession of guns or, at least, understand that regular possession necessitates careful safety countermeasures.

So far I have beat the odds, trained extensively, and made a choice, so I will accept your invitation. I have no problem with it and if I am shot with my own gun it will be after a hell of a struggle.

Depends on who you ask I guess. There are actual definitions out there. There is a Wikipedia page. There is a U.S. Army definition of an assault rifle. The term is definitely out there. An AR-15 (Armalite -15) doesn’t tend to fit these definitions as they don’t have a full auto mode. According to one source, they can fire 45 rounds per minute. 400/minute with a bump stock. Assault Rifles are often confused with “assault weapons” which is a legal definition that can change based on state but generally fits AR-15 style rifles - semi automatic, large detachable magazine, pistol style grip.

I knew none of this before looking it up now. I’m not the one to debate with, just relaying info from some Google searching.

Kind of makes me thankful I never got married. My brother worked his butt of paying child support for 12 yrs and doesn't have much left to his name 35 yrs later. I guess any kind of pressure to pay child support when you are barely squeaking by can bring about a ton of mental stress. But why kill others is what I'm trying to grasp.

Relevance?

1

Quattro_power t1_isbpne4 wrote

Relevance stems from the fact that the type of weapon has little to nothing to do with what happened in either situation. It also completely ignores the fact that the majority of gun deaths involve handguns yet I never hear anyone saying things like let's ban handguns or this wouldn't have happened if we didn't have handguns

> In 2020, handguns were involved in 59% of the 13,620 U.S. gun murders and non-negligent manslaughters for which data is available, according to the FBI. Rifles – the category that includes guns sometimes referred to as “assault weapons” – were involved in 3% of firearm murders.

How many rounds can you fire with a handgun in 90 seconds? Banning non pistols works.

1

ccwilson84 t1_iske9e3 wrote

Most semi automatic handguns can fire at the same speed as rifles. They fire one bullet every time you pull the trigger. The speed is determined by how fast the trigger is pulled and has nothing to do with whether its a handgun or rifle.

1

HelloMalt t1_isd3cj3 wrote

so you think a more effective solution is to ban all the weapons? damn, everyone check out antifa o'commie over here.

Not surprised this is over your head - you’re lost. I’m not calling to ban anything. If anything I think some of the bans currently in place in CT go too far as it is, and this thread just highlights that

So let's say you are informed by local or state police they will be coming to enforce a court order to remove all firearms from your residence or wherever else you store them. What do you do?

Hide in the bushes and wait for them? Take out as many as you can? Make them take it from your cold, dead hands?

Unfortunately there’s enough people where that may happen that confiscation is unlikely. Instead gun ownership will be a privilege of the rich and patient willing to go through the loopholes and pay to own firearms

He defiantly could have since most rifles and handguns are semi auto which means 1 trigger pull = 1 bullet it all just depends on how fast the shooters trigger finger is
