This has been something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I specifically target this post at people who are just graduating college because I am curious of your perspectives on the job market you are facing and your broader plans, since you guys are our future as a state.
Pre Covid, things were pretty gloomy for this state. The only big headlines you'd hear about here were about companies relocating out of here, young people leaving with them, old people retiring down south, and just a general sense of slow death and decay for this place.
Covid was such an Earth-shattering event that it kind of took our minds off the systemic issues CT faces, but after seeing a couple of trends at work, I was inspired to make this post.
From what I'm seeing on the ground, big companies in this state are barely hiring anyone local anymore, especially out of college. They are taking full advantage of the rise in work-from-home and have expanded their hiring ranges to pretty much everywhere, but the result has been that I see very few graduates from the CSU school system working the entry level jobs here anymore. That alarms me a lot of obvious reasons.
Combine this with a surge in housing costs brought on by the pandemic, a looming recession (when one could argue the CT economy never really fully recovered from the 08 one), and I am very concerned for CT's future. I don't see what we have going for us now as a state, if anything the trends that were killing us have just accelerated now and I could see our population collapse over the next 10-20 years.
I tend to be pretty pessimistic so I wanted to share my thoughts and see how others feel about where things are going.
