Wait what we have Aurora Australis? Where is this?????
Deffs headed down south for this view
PrimalGreen t1_j4d2quz wrote
In Victoria it can be seen at Wilson's Prom and my family have also seen it in the Otways before on a really cold night!
fatguyfromqueens t1_j4dajbb wrote
But it is pretty rare, no? I mean Australia isn't as far south as Europe and North America are north. New York state is further north in latitude than Melbourne is south in latitude and the Aurora Borealis is pretty rare even up near the Canadian border.
chandu6234 t1_j4dlem4 wrote
Yeah, you'll have to keep track on sun flares and when we have really big one check on weather and pray that there no clouds and it's winter. So many things have to line up.
jimmux t1_j4dy3l1 wrote
We had some strong activity around Christmas so I was able to see it in Tasmania. I haven't heard of it being caught in WA before, but dark skies can make a difference, and they certainly have that.
PrimalGreen t1_j4dd3pv wrote
It is very rare yes!
SamGropler t1_j4dx7cb wrote
Hobart is at 42 degrees south. NYC is at 40 degrees north.
fatguyfromqueens t1_j4dxyed wrote
But Melbourne is at 39 degrees south. Plus 42 north is Chicago and Boston. Even rural areas that latitude see very few auroras (aurorae?)
SamGropler t1_j4e1i49 wrote
So Australia is as far south as America is north (not counting Alaska).
fatguyfromqueens t1_j4ecy78 wrote
I wrote that Australia isn't as far south as Europe and North America, not America (meaning, the US).
SamGropler t1_j4ed87i wrote
Is America not in North America?

I don't think you understand how large Western Australia is
imapassenger1 t1_j4ddkou wrote
I think I do. I was referring to the name a. australis as opposed to the northern lights. I meant it's in Australia (for the benefit of our northern hemisphere friends). WA is fking huge and it could only be seen right at the southern extreme I would bet. Tasmania is really the only regular sighting place in Australia, being furthest south.

Amazing! I always wanted to check this out. Where was this in WA?
jamirocky888 t1_j4etq2o wrote
I really have no idea, but guessing, either Yeagerup dunes south of Pemberton, or maybe over Esperance way
steven_sandner OP t1_j4kdjo4 wrote
u/Farmer_Lister - Jami is correct - Esperance is the spot - to the east

Can someone tell me more about aurora Australis? Looks beautiful
cyber2024 t1_j4c13sh wrote
It's like Aurora Borealis, but near the south pole.
Howwasthatdoneagain t1_j4dyhao wrote
Australis means Southern. That's how Australia got it's name. Southern land.
The Southern Lights are known as Aurora Australis just as the Northern Lights are known as Aurora Borealis.
This picture though..... raises questions. The colour to start with... the location of the milkyway in the sky. Everything just looks wrong. Aside from that nice image, whatever it is.

Are these dunes around lancelin? Fantastic photo. The west took a while to grow on me. The pilbara a little longer. But now it in the blood!!
Drunken-samurai t1_j4dvjet wrote
I would hazard to say Lannon is waaaay too far north to see it, likely down in margs or something.

I knew Australia is mostly desert but I don't think I've ever seen a picture of the dunes
abodedwind t1_j4dann2 wrote
There's desert sand dunes, but they're not as ubiquitous in our desert areas as they are in e.g. the Sahara or other deserts in Africa. I don't know where this was taken, but considering your best chance of seeing the Southern Lights is as far south as possible (therefore on the coast), these are likely to be large beach sand dunes instead.

Austral is simply another word for southern. How Australia got named. The same phenomenon can be seen from Argentina and Chile. I got the impression that some people thought that it was called that because of the country the photo was taken.
inferiorcritic t1_j4dn140 wrote
I think people were only surprised because Australia does not extend as south as Argentina and Chile.
