I hike this trail often. Last year the water was the highest I have ever seen it, the river is about 50 yards from where this image is taken and I am knee deep in black water already. The crazy thing is, this is how flooded this area was in September - before Hurricane Ian came through. After Ian, this entire area was closed to flooding. The river flowed over not only the entire park but major streets and neighborhoods around central Florida.

It's a great trail, very close to UCF. It has a variety of scenery and you can even continue to hike along the river if you want. There is almost never anyone out past the power lines so I really enjoying getting way out there. Just if you go out that far, be advised of hunting seasons and wear a bright orange shirt or hat because you never know.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely check it out!

I lived in Orlando for 8 years and I gotta be honest, the thought of going out in the woods never crossed my mind. Kudos to you for being willing, I’d be scared shitless.

I mostly stay to the established trails. But I will say for this photo, being so far into the black water was definitely sketchy for me personally. I’m aware of the presence of gators but luckily I didn’t cross any this time.

Now add a lot of houses and that is what it looked like a few months ago along University Blvd around Rouse Road ... just after Ian hit.

Ahhh! An EarthPorn post I’ve been to! You could get lost here for hours.
I also milled around the Sandhills not far from here but the mosquitos were too much for me… I went right after Ian without any bug spray, though, so that’s on me.

Nice! I’ve got some shots on my website from the Sandhills trails. I also went after Ian because it was just about the only trail left open in central Florida.
