Should we make it impossible for AI to rewrite its own code or modify itself?
It is generally considered a good idea to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) systems from being able to modify their own code or architecture, especially if the AI system is performing a safety-critical or potentially harmful task. This is because allowing an AI system to modify its own code or architecture could potentially allow it to change its behavior in unpredictable ways, which could lead to unintended consequences or even harm to people or the environment.
However, there may be cases where it is useful for an AI system to be able to modify its own code or architecture, such as for self-improvement or learning. In these cases, it is important to carefully consider the risks and benefits of allowing an AI system to modify itself and to put in place appropriate safeguards and oversight to ensure that any modifications are safe and beneficial.
