There's a chance it's an extremely simple social app -- perhaps the VR version of Facetime. Simply being able to feel like you're in a room with someone you care about.
On top of that, I really think comfort is the other massive hurdle. I know there are people able to wear VR goggles for hours on end, but those are all enthusiasts, willing to make the modifications to make that possible. You take a regular out of the box VR headset and give it to a layperson, I doubt most of them would be willing to wear it for an hour.
